A24’s latest documentary nearly outgrossed an entire film’s box office run in just one weekend. Elizabeth Holmes’ documentary opened big against Melania’s complete domestic haul, and the numbers tell a striking story.
You Can See Everything opens big, almost beats Melania’s entire box office run
A24’s You Can See Everything earned an estimated $15 million in its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim documentary played on just 855 screens across North America. It averaged $17,544 per screen with over 2,000 sellout showings over the weekend.
The Elizabeth Holmes documentary more than doubled the $7.1 million opening of Melania, which debuted earlier this year. Melania had a production budget of $40 million and a $35 million marketing spend behind it. The Brett Ratner-directed documentary went on to earn $16 million in its entire domestic run, per Box Office Mojo.
You Can See Everything nearly matched that entire total in a single weekend. The $15 million debut fell just $1 million short of Melania’s complete domestic haul. It also achieved this from fewer than 1,000 theaters, while Melania played at 1,778 locations during its opening.
The film now holds the second-biggest opening for a non-music documentary in domestic history. Only Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 had a larger debut with $23.9 million back in 2004. A24 spent less than $10 million in combined production and marketing costs on the project.
You Can See Everything landed at No. 2 on the weekend chart behind Paramount’s Street Fighter. The video game adaptation topped the chart with $31 million from 3,575 theaters. A24 has not yet announced plans for a wider theatrical expansion of the documentary.
