Melania Trump‘s documentary has set a high bar for Nathan Fielder‘s You Can See Everything. The $7 million film began filming in 2023 and will be released theatrically this week. Hype for Fielder’s upcoming documentary remains high, giving exhibitors hope for it to become a breakout in the documentary genre (via Variety).
You Can See Everything premiered at a secret screening at the Telluride Film Festival earlier in September. At the time of writing, the film holds a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes with 53 reviews, which is exponentially higher than Melania’s meagre 9%. The low score didn’t stop Melania from drawing audiences, earning a 99% audience rating.
How Melania set a high bar for documentary box office
Melania was released at the end of January this year, opening to $7.1 million from 1,778 theaters. The film’s budget was over $40 million, and it ended its theatrical run with over $16 million, resulting in a flop. However, the film did make history by becoming the biggest opening for a non-music or concert documentary in over a decade. While You Can See Everything needs less to turn a profit, Melania’s theatrical turnout threatens its chances of breaking that record.
You Can See Everything follows Fielder and his crew documenting the lives of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her family ahead of her prison sentence. According to its reviews, the film blurs the lines between the documentary’s subject and the filmmakers.
Fielder co-directed the film with filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, who recently directed and released Primetime. The film surprised interested viewers with its MPA rating, followed by Holmes dropping an ominous message ahead of its release.
You Can See Everything is scheduled to hit the theaters on October 16, 2026.
