JD Vance’s Charlie Kirk Tribute Draws Attention on Anniversary

A year after Charlie Kirk’s assassination, JD Vance revisited a friendship that shaped his politics, faith, and family life. Speaking with emotion, the vice president connected Kirk’s influence to his return to Christianity. He also talked about a personal decision with his wife, Usha, that brought their fourth child into the world.

JD Vance remembered meeting Charlie Kirk around 2018 or 2019 at Fox News’ studios. Their connection developed quickly. Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA, backed Vance’s 2022 Ohio Senate bid and encouraged him to speak more openly about his Christian beliefs. On The Charlie Kirk Show, Vance said Kirk viewed politics through one basic goal of making people’s lives better (Via NY Post).

“As much as we might agree with the underlying substance of some of those cliches, it’s to make people’s lives better and to build a kind of country where young men can become virtuous husbands and fathers and raise good families,” Vance said.

Kirk’s death at 31 left Vance dealing with grief up close. After Kirk was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University, Vance accompanied his body from Utah to Phoenix aboard Air Force Two. The loss also resurfaced during a conversation with Kirk’s widow, Erika.

Vance recalled Erika crying soon after the shooting and saying, “I wish we had more babies together.” Those words stayed with him. He told the podcast that the moment forced him to think about the choices people cannot reverse later in life. That reflection helped push him toward having another child with his wife Usha. Their son Alec was six weeks old when Vance shared the story.

Vance did not frame the tragedy as something with an easy upside. “There’s no silver lining to Charlie’s death,” he stressed, while acknowledging what he described as “little rays of sunshine” that followed amid the pain.

Kirk also occupied Vance’s thoughts before his Thursday night speech at the Republican midterm convention. Vance remembered Kirk cheering for him during the 2024 Republican National Convention and described him as someone who never let political ambition or jealousy get in the way of supporting others.
