Miami Vice ’85 brings the iconic crime series to the big screen
Miami Vice ’85 brings a reimagined version of the glamour and corruption of the mid-1980s Miami. It draws inspiration from the pilot episode of the original Miami Vice show, that run from September 1984 to June 1989. That Universal Television series became a major cultural influence, shaping fashion, music, television, and filmmaking during its run.
The project is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann.
Joseph Kosinski, best known for directing F1 and Top Gun: Maverick, is attached to direct the film. The Academy Award-nominated filmmaker is also producing the film alongside Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions. Dan Gilroy penned the script. Universal Pictures plans to shoot the movie for IMAX, adding a large-scale presentation to the action-crime drama. Production is set to begin later this year.
With such a star-studded cast attached, Miami Vice ’85 is gradually shaping up as a modern interpretation of the iconic crime franchise.
Michael Mann previously directed a film adaptation called Miami Vice. While critics praised Mann’s direction, the film received warm reviews and grossed more than $164 million.
Miami Vice ’85 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028.
