Fans of Salma Hayek and Quentin Tarantino should catch their iconic hit movie before it disappears from Netflix. This film also stars Antonio Banderas and Joaquim de Almeida.
Desperado is leaving Netflix next month.
The 1995 neo-Western action film Desperado will leave Netflix on September 1, 2026. Some of the other projects leaving the platform that day are Abducted on Prom Night, American Graffiti, Leatherheads, and Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story (via What’s on Netflix).
Robert Rodriguez wrote and directed the movie and also served as its producer. Quentin Tarantino, who is a frequent collaborator of Rodriguez, portrays a character credited as the Pick-up Guy. Meanwhile, Salma Hayek plays Carolina, the primary love interest opposite Antonio Banderas’ Manito “El Mariachi.” De Almeida stars as the movie’s chief antagonist.
Desperado is widely regarded as Hayek’s breakout movie. It was also one of Banderas’ earliest Hollywood films. The cast also includes Steve Buscemi as Buscemi, Cheech Marin as Short Bartender, Tito Larriva as Tavo, and Danny Trejo as Navajas. The plot revolves around El Mariachi, a Mexican man traveling with a guitar full of guns. He seeks vengeance against those responsible for the death of his lover. Carolina is the woman he saves during a gunfight, and she, in turn, helps him tend to his injuries.
The movie premiered at Cannes on May 25, 1995, before debuting in US theaters on August 25, 1995. Desperado received positive responses and currently has a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 56 reviews. Nick Rogers of the Midwest Film Journal gave the movie a positive review. “Come to think of it, there’s also a contextual truth to that,” Rogers shared. “Making films might be easier now, but making them fun is not necessarily as simple. Desperado illustrates that when Rodriguez was in his prime, no corners were cut.
Notably, Desperado is the second entry in Rodriguez’s Mexico trilogy after 1992’s El Mariachi and 2003’s Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
