Ethan Hawke is a gold smuggler in the new trailer for his upcoming movie, The Weight. Directed by Padraic McKinley, the film also stars Russell Crowe.
The official synopsis for The Weight reads, “In Oregon in 1933, Samuel Murphy is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp. Warden Clancy tempts him with early release if he smuggles gold through deadly wilderness, but betrayal festers within the crew, and Murphy questions how far he’ll go to see his child again.”

What do we see in The Weight trailer?
In the trailer for The Weight, Hawke’s character, Samuel, is seen being forced to move away from his little daughter as he is sent to work at an exhaustive camp. Crowe’s character, Warden, assures him that he can secure an early release if he can smuggle gold through the wild forest area for him. However, things go south, and the story witnesses moments of betrayal within the entire crew.
Besides Hawke and Crowe, The Weight also features Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, and Sam Hazeldine.
Hawke was most recently seen in the acclaimed 2026 movie, Blue Moon. He portrayed the famous lyricist Lorenz Hart in the story. For his stupendous performance, Hawke received a Best Actor nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards. The film also starred Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott. Besides The Weight, Hawke will also appear in an upcoming drama, titled I, Object, alongside Anna Faris and Karl Urban.
Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines have written the screenplay of The Weight, based on a story by Matthew Booi & Leo Scherman, and Matthew Chapman.
The movie has Simon Fields, Nathan Fields, Ryan Hawke, Jonas Katzenstein, and Maximilian Leo as the producers. Executive producers include Andreas Rübo, Klaus Dohle, Frédéric Fiore, and Céline Dornier. Ralf Berchtold, Peter Jarowey, Rich Goldberg, and Peter Block are also executive producers.
Vertical’s The Weight will release in theaters on September 18, 2026.
