Directed by Padraic McKinley and written by Matthew Booi and Shelby Gaines, The Weight was released in U.S. theaters on September 18, 2026. Set during the economic collapse of the 1930s, the film follows Samuel Murphy, a father whose imprisonment leaves his daughter Penny without his care. While serving time at a labor camp in Oregon, he is approached by Warden Clancy with an offer that could change his situation.

Murphy must join a small group of inmates on a mission to deliver a large quantity of gold across 100 miles of difficult terrain. The job offers a possible path to freedom, but the men face a dangerous route and cannot be certain they can rely on one another. Murphy takes the assignment with the hope that completing it will allow him to return to Penny.

The film stars Ethan Hawke as Samuel Murphy and Russell Crowe as Warden Clancy. Julia Jones appears as Anna, Austin Amelio plays Rankin, Avi Nash portrays Singh, and Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen plays Olson, among others.

Reviews for The Weight have been favorable on Rotten Tomatoes. The film holds a 94 percent critics’ score from 143 reviews, while its audience rating stands at 84 percent.
