The View’s Joy Behar Says JD Vance Is Not a ‘Bad Guy’

Longtime critic of the Trump administration, Joy Behar, surprised audiences this week by offering rare praise for Vice President JD Vance. The co-host of The View said she does not believe he is a “bad guy,” in the context of a presidential bid.

Speaking on the show’s Behind the Table segment on Tuesday, Joy Behar reflected on the intense interview she had just conducted alongside her co-hosts. She admitted that a political faceoff between JD Vance and California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2028 would be compelling television.

“Truthfully, as I said to you in the beginning of this conversation, I don’t think that he’s a bad guy. So, if he runs against, say, Gavin Newsom, that’ll be an interesting debate to see those two because they’re both intelligent,” Behar said.

Her remarks came mere hours after she grilled the Vice President on race, immigration policy, and President Donald Trump’s record.

The interview itself was not without friction. A portion of the live studio audience reportedly refused to applaud when Vance walked onto the set to promote his latest memoir, Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith. Several attendees sat motionless while the six panelists, Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Behar, stood to welcome him.

Vance addressed the administration’s vision for the country when Goldberg asked where people of color fit in. “Maybe you don’t believe this coming from me, but I think everyone is welcome to our political coalition,” Vance said. “Frankly, even if you didn’t vote for us, everybody is welcome in our country, so as long as you’re an American citizen with the duties and the legal obligations and rights to be here.”

Behar also made clear her personal political stance remains firmly with the Democratic Party.
