New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared his reaction to the chants of “My Mayor’s still Muslim” after the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals victory. The chant has since gone viral, and Mamdani does not seem to have a problem with it at all. The original chant had to be updated after the Knicks lost Game 3 of the finals, but the new chant made little difference to the feel of it.
Zohran Mamdani responds to the viral Knicks chant
In the days leading up to Game 3 of the NBA Finals, a viral chant involving New York mayor Zohran Mamdani started spreading like wildfire. The viral chant read, “My mayor’s Muslim, my bagel’s Jewish, my Christian Dior, Knicks in four.”
Unfortunately, after the Knicks lost their game against the San Antonio Spurs, the chat had to be updated slightly. MD Ahnaf Hossain, a 23-year-old Knicks fan, updated the chant (via Guardian) to, “My mayor’s still Muslim, my bagel’s still Jewish, even the Pope’s on our side, Knicks in five.” Mamdani seemed very impressed with the chant.
The Mayor gave his response in an interview with Jacob Soboroff for MS Now (via Complex). “He was right,” Mamdani said, “I haven’t met him, but he’s a New Yorker whose words have really stayed with all of us. Thanks to him, there are a lot of people who have just been running up to me over the last few weeks just shouting at me, ‘My mayor’s Muslim!’ … It speaks to what the city is, and even this team. It’s not just a cookie cut out of the same thing again and again; it’s every single player having a role, bringing together all of the five boroughs for this moment. It’s truly a joy.”
Now that the New York Knicks have won the NBA Finals, New York remains in a state of euphoria.
