Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma has accused NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani of posturing on the global stage instead of governing his city. The NBA player rebuked Mamdani for releasing a video, labelling the mayor a “mayor playing president.”
Kyle Kuzma slams Zohran Mamdani over Netanyahu video
Mamdani posted a video that called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. Essentially demanding that authorities detain Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant.
NBA’s Kyle Kuzma responded on X (formerly Twitter) by dismissing the address as empty performance. “This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they don’t have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content,” he wrote.
The nine-year veteran broadened his criticism into a sweeping take on modern ambition, describing a culture where appearance trumps substance. “A mayor playing president. A founder playing operator. A content creator playing one-on-one, thinking he’s a pro. A 25-year-old with a ring light playing economist,” Kuzma continued.
“Everyone auditioning. Nobody building. We’re raising a generation that is learning the reward isn’t in doing the thing; it’s in looking like you did the thing. The clip is the career. The pose is the product. The soundbite is the substitute for a life’s work. Don’t fall for distractions.”
The NYC mayor’s video, however, also drew backing from within the NBA. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama both liked Zohran Mamdani’s Instagram post, which branded Netanyahu “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.”
Jewish organisations and political opponents have repeatedly condemned Mamdani’s language on Israel. Israel does not recognise the ICC’s jurisdiction, and Netanyahu denies the court’s allegations.
While Mamdani once asked the city’s legal department to explore whether local police could enforce the warrant, he later conceded New York City lacks any legal power to arrest visiting foreign leaders. Detractors maintain he should tackle the city’s own challenges rather than wade into international matters outside his authority.
