A24’s Backrooms is turning into a box office storm right now. The horror film has become a sensation since it hit theaters last week. Now, it’s set to reach a major milestone for production just six days after release.
What box office record did Backrooms set for A24?
Deadline reports that Backrooms, made on a budget of just $10 million, is expected to surpass $100 million at the domestic box office on Wednesday. With that, it’s going to become A24’s first movie ever to make this record.
Backrooms will also leave behind the studio’s previous highest domestic grosser, Marty Supreme, featuring Timothée Chalamet. The sports drama from 2025 made $96 million in North America during its theatrical run.
Interestingly, Backrooms is also on track to become A24’s second-highest-grossing movie. The title is currently held by 2022’s Everything Everywhere All At Once, which made over $190 million worldwide. Backrooms currently stands at more than $136 million worldwide, trailing Marty Supreme ($148 million).

Now, what’s worth noting is that Backrooms has a strong chance to even become A24’s most successful movie to date across the globe. In its second weekend, the horror movie, helmed by Kane Parsons, is expected to earn between $32-$37 million. With growing audience interest, the film is well-positioned to claim the top spot.
Ahead of its release, Backrooms was actually projected to earn only about $20 million domestically. However, it eventually made over $80 million in North America and $118 million worldwide in the first weekend.
Backrooms features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass in key roles. Other cast members include Finn Bennett, Lucite Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. Its official, yet very brief, synopsis reads, “A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.”
Besides smashing box office records, Backrooms has also impressed critics and fans. It currently holds a very impressive Tomatometer score of 89% and a Popcornmeter score of 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Director Kane Parsons has already expressed interest in developing a sequel following the film’s success.
