Dancing with the Stars champion Robert Irwin recently addressed who he’s backing for Season 35. The wildlife conservationist and TV personality, who danced his way to the Mirrorball Trophy, is now turning his eye to the next round of contenders.
Robert Irwin explains why he thinks Maura Higgins can win DWTS Season 35
Robert Irwin has opened up about why he believes Maura Higgins has what it takes to claim the Dancing with the Stars Season 35 Mirrorball Trophy.
Irwin, who took home last season’s Mirrorball Trophy with pro partner Witney Carson and will host this summer’s spinoff, Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, is tipping the Love Island star as next season’s champion.
His prediction comes down to timing. The show unveiled Maura Higgins as one of the first Season 35 cast members. It echoed how it introduced Irwin at the start of last season.
“I walked her out [to announce the season in April] and she was like, ‘I feel like this is a good omen. Like, this was you last year, you were the first announced,'” Robert Irwin said in an interview with PEOPLE. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, I think the luck is on your side.'”
The wildlife conservationist, who landed a PEOPLE cover before his own season, joked that Higgins will likely need a feature in the magazine to stay in the running. “We’ve got to keep the tradition going,” he added, laughing.
The DWTS Season 35 cast was revealed during Hulu’s Get Real House event on April 22. The Traitors alum Maura Higgins and Summer House star Ciara Miller were the first two celebrities to join the lineup. The remaining stars and pro partners will be unveiled at a later date.
Dancing with the Stars Season 35 premieres this fall on ABC and Disney+. Irwin’s spinoff, Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, debuts on ABC on July 13.
