Taylor Sheridan’s Gritty Paramount+ Show To Stream on Netflix

A Taylor Sheridan-produced mini-series on Paramount+ will soon be available to stream on Netflix. It chronicles the story of Bass Reeves, one of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves arrives on Netflix in June

Lawmen: Bass Reeves will begin streaming on Netflix from Monday, June 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).

The series is based on real events from Bass Reeves’ life and adapts the first two books in Sidney Thompson’s Bass Reeves trilogy. The first book, Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves, recounts Reeves’ journey from being a slave to becoming a deputy. The second book, Hell on the Border, explores the events from the peak of his career.

Taylor Sheridan served as an executive producer, while Chad Feehan developed the show. Feehan is known for his contributions to other popular series, such as Ray Donovan, Banshee, Rectify, and Southland. He is also serving as the creator for Dutton Ranch, an upcoming spin-off and sequel to Yellowstone.

Interestingly, the show was initially going to serve as a spin-off of Sheridan’s 1883, which in turn was a spin-off of Yellowstone. During early production, the show project was titled 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, per Deadline. However, after learning more about the deputy’s story, the show creator decided to make it a standalone series (via TVLine).

David Oyelowo headlines the show as the titular character. The rest of the cast includes Lauren E. Banks, Demi Singleton, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, Dennis Quaid, Donald Sutherland, and Grantham Coleman, among others, in prominent roles.

The mini-series featured eight episodes. It premiered on Paramount+ with two episodes on November 5, 2023, and later aired on CBS. Reportedly, it also drew over 7.5 million viewers across both mediums within seven days.

Moreover, the series was directed by a team of accomplished filmmakers. Christina Alexandra Voros, known for her work on Yellowstone and 1883, directed five episodes. Meanwhile, Damian Marcano, who worked on both seasons of HBO Max’s The Pitt, directed three episodes of Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the mini-series showcases an impressive Tomatometer score of 89% and a Popcornmeter score of 78%.
