Sinners and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler recently teased what lies ahead for him after his upcoming projects, Black Panther 3 and the X-Files reboot. Coogler is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of today, with Sinners garnering a record-breaking 16 nominations at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.
Ryan Coogler wants to make a rom-com like When Harry Met Sally
Coogler, along with Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, recently gave a sprawling interview to Deadline. During the interview, Coogler expressed his interest in making a romantic comedy and his admiration for the late Rob Reiner and When Harry Met Sally.
“When it comes to genres that I haven’t done that I would like to do, the best answer I think is all of them,” Coogler began. “I got kids, so I’m hoping to be around for a long time, and I’m hoping to work for as long as I can. There’s not a genre of movie that I don’t love.”
The Fruitvale Station director continued, “So, I hope to work on all of them. I’d like to make a soup-to-nuts. Rest in peace, Rob Reiner, you know what I mean, but When Harry Met Sally is one of my movies that I think about with him. And to me, that’s such a solid romantic comedy that feels adult in whole, and it has eternal relevance, you know?”
Coogler then proceeded to add that he would “love to make a rom-com that works like that one day.”
Recently, Coogler’s X-Files reboot series got a pilot order at Hulu. He is also helming the third Black Panther movie. While some websites report that a few other Ryan Coogler projects are in the pipeline, not much has been heard about them recently. This means he could potentially direct a romantic comedy after Black Panther 3.
