The Empire State Building recently made a bold move that left many New Yorkers annoyed. The iconic skyscraper’s tribute to the New England Patriots has sparked outrage among sports fans, with many taking to social media to weigh in on the decision. The Empire State Building lit up in the Patriots’ colors, angering the New York teams’ fans.
Fans not happy with Empire State Building’s Patriots tribute
The Empire State Building’s tribute to the New England Patriots has received flak from New York sports fans. New Yorkers are fuming over the legendary landmark lighting up in red, white, and blue to mark the Patriots’ win in the AFC Championship game. The Patriots will now face the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
The Empire State Building honored the Patriots, rivals of the New York Giants and Jets, with a dazzling display. The 102-story skyscraper was bathed in the team’s iconic colors after their AFC Championship win. The grand gesture was further amplified by a tribute tweet from the building’s official X account.
“Santa Clara bound! Shining in @Patriots colors in honor of their AFC Championship win,” read the post. A video of the 1,250-foot-tall monument glowing in red, white, and blue accompanied the tweet.
Jets and Giants fans, however, weren’t happy about the tribute and took to social media to share their thoughts. They cited previous controversies like Spygate as well as the Patriots’ 2008 and 2012 Super Bowl wins.
“Wait, is this a joke? You are in New York! You think if the Jets won they would be lighting buildings up in green in Boston? I feel like I’m having a stroke,” tweeted one X user in response to the post.
“DISGRACE,” echoed another. “What kinda c**p is this? Fire the person making these decisions,” commented a third. “I mean… it ain’t like they bout to use those colors for the Giants,” yet another comment read.
The Empire State Building has previously lit up in the colors of other teams, including a green display for the Philadelphia Eagles following their NFC Championship victory last year.
Additionally, the Empire State Building also honored the Seattle Seahawks, who will face the Patriots in Super Bowl LX on February 8, 2026, in San Francisco, with a celebratory display.
