Spider-Man Universe Movie Canceled by Sony – Report

Sony Pictures has reportedly shelved another planned entry in its Spider-Man Universe. A new report suggests that the long-discussed Spider-Woman movie, which was going to be directed by Olivia Wilde, is no longer in development, adding to the growing list of scrapped Marvel spin-offs from the studio.

Olivia Wilde’s Spider-Woman movie won’t see the light of day

Sony has reportedly paused multiple Spider-Man-related spin-offs following the underwhelming performance of Kraven the Hunter. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Wilde’s Spider-Woman project has now been scrapped as part of that decision (via ComicBookMovie.com).

The reported cancellation is unlikely to shock fans, particularly given that Jessica Drew’s most significant comic storylines are tied to S.H.I.E.L.D. and The Avengers, which are elements absent from Sony’s standalone Spider-Man Universe. The studio first announced plans for a Spider-Woman movie in 2020, with Wilde attached to both develop and direct the project. Despite early buzz, the film failed to gain momentum, with no casting announcements or production updates surfacing in the years that followed. Over time, Sony’s focus is said to have shifted toward Madame Web, a female-led project that ultimately moved forward instead.

Now, while the Spider-Woman movie may be dead, Richtman also reports a potential change in Sony’s broader Marvel strategy. The studio is said to be more willing to share its characters with Marvel Studios. In previous years, Sony reportedly blocked Marvel from using certain characters, including Kraven the Hunter, in MCU projects.

Venom followed a similar path. After Sony found success with Venom, the character remained largely unavailable to Marvel Studios, aside from limited crossover appearances in Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home. If this new openness continues, it could allow characters once reserved for Sony-led spin-offs, such as Black Cat and Silver Sable, to appear within the MCU instead.

For now, the Spider-Woman movie reportedly appears destined to remain one of Sony’s unrealized Marvel projects as the studio reassesses its approach to the Spider-Man Universe.
