David Letterman describes current late night comedy scene as a ‘mess’
David Letterman opened up on problems faced by comedians under Donald Trump’s rule on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. During the interview, the 78-year-old stated how comedians have every right to mock while the President becomes an easy target. He praised Kimmel as Trump is a common target for his jokes. Letterman said, “You know that I love you. I love this man. People are aware of the fact that you are the leader of the resistance?.”
Further, Kimmel replied, “I am the totally ineffective leader of the resistance.” Subsequently, the guest explained, “Speaking of leaders, let me just say one thing here. I’m going to suck up to you because I feel like if I kind of tag along with you I’ll be glorified in retrospect. …” Letterman further added, “Now this is irrespective of party or political ideology. Irrespective of party or political ideology, if the leader of the free world is a fool, the leader of the free world should expect and examine every bit of ridicule he receives.”
Additionally, Letterman shared how he is glad to no longer be part of late-night comedy to clash with Trump. “No, I’m so glad to be out from under this mess, because people like you and people like Stephen [Colbert] and people like Seth [Meyers] do such a masterful job of this, defending democracy,” he noted. He continued, “Thank God for you, thank God for others, SNL and everybody else. It’s just, I think it’s the way things need to be, in a democracy that’s seemingly this crippled.”
Moreover, he congratulated Kimmel on a contract extension with ABC. This was after a temporary suspension due to Kimmel’s comments on Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Letterman congratulated him, “Another year of twisting those folks at Disney, good for you.”
