Matt Damon Reveals Wife’s Brain Aneurysm Surgery That Happened Right Before the Oscars

Matt Damon has shared a personal story about his wife Lucy’s health scare before the 2024 Academy Awards. The actor revealed that she underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm just one week before the ceremony. Despite the difficult experience, she later joined him at the Oscars after-party.

In a GQ interview, Damon discussed two Oscar ceremonies that held special meaning for him. He recalled the 2024 ceremony when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was nominated. However, Lucy faced a serious health emergency just one week before the ceremony. She underwent surgery for a brain aneurysm and needed time to recover.

The Instigators star said, “She’s totally fine, thank God, but she had this brain surgery the week before the Oscars. But it was the first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back. And she surprised me and got a dress, and we went out to the after-party, because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it.”

Damon praised Lucy for making the effort to attend despite her recent surgery. He called her gesture heroic and said it meant a lot to him.

Matt Damon Also Recalled Missing Another Major Oscars Moment

Damon also highlighted missing the 2007 event when The Departed won Best Picture. He said, “I think everybody was really focused on Marty. And I remember I was shooting second unit for The Bourne Ultimatum during that Oscars, so I didn’t go. I was living in Miami at the time, and I had an infant. My wife Lucy and I were lying in bed watching it and so nervous for Marty. And then when he won, I was jumping up and down in the bedroom, and I remember being really excited.”

He added, “And then the next category was best picture, and The Departed won. And I realized in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen. And I turned to Lucy, and I was like, ‘Shit, we should be there!’ And then the next few weeks, I got all these calls from all the cast and the studio, like, ‘Hey, where were you, man?’ I totally blew it.”

The Departed won 4 Academy Awards, while Oppenheimer won Best Picture, Best Director, and five other categories at the 96th Academy Awards.
