Tootsie and American Horror Story star Jessica Lange has reflected on the possibility of retiring after a career spanning five decades. The actress says she feels her acting career is “coming to an end.”
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lange discussed the limited acting opportunities she sees ahead after American Horror Story. “I actually feel like I’m coming to an end,” she said. She mentioned that while her career might be nearing its end, it’s not a bad way to conclude, especially since her final role was as Mary Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey into Night.
“There are a couple projects that have been in the works forever that may or may not happen. I don’t know. It doesn’t seem easy to get things made anymore. At least not the kind of films that interest me.”
Hollywood’s changing landscape has Jessica Lange questioning what’s next
Lange’s remarks indicate that the actress has become cautious about Hollywood’s evolving practices as filmmaking has advanced. Nevertheless, she remained poised throughout the interview, taking pride in her work in film, television, and theatre. When asked how she’d like to be remembered as an actor, she said, “For some good parts. For some good films. For being an honest actor.”
Lange also reflected on the opportunities her career gave her. She touched on how that career made it challenging to balance with her family. “Difficult at times, balancing family and career and locations and dragging my kids here and there,” she said. “But it all was a great adventure. I’m so grateful that [it] came my way.”
Lange will next be seen in American Horror Story Season 13. She received the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival in October. While her comments suggest she will be done with acting soon, she has yet to announce her retirement officially.
