Digger star John Goodman has revealed that he once turned down a nude scene after losing a significant amount of weight. The actor, who shed more than 200 pounds over several years, has now opened up about his weight-loss journey and the experience.
Speaking with host Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goodman opened up about his fitness journey. When asked if he has ever been faced with a request for a scene that might be too far, Goodman replied, “There was one scene I thought I was going to have to be naked, and I said, ‘I don’t know.’ My body’s too messed up from losing all this weight.”
The actor, best known for his roles in Roseanne and The Big Lebowski, had lost a significant amount of weight by 2023. He also discussed how his fitness journey crossed with his acting career.
When asked whether his weight had affected his acting opportunities, Goodman admitted, “A lot of it I think might have been self-sabotage.” In the same interview, he also revealed that the negative reviews for Digger “hurt.”
John Goodman is still getting used to his new appearance
Goodman did not disclose which film featured the scene that would have required him to appear nude. He also spoke about adjusting to his changed appearance following his weight loss. “I’m still getting used to my face,” he said. “I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself and I go, ‘Wow’.”
The 74-year-old actor has struggled with weight loss for much of his career, especially during the production of Roseanne. In a 2016 interview with ABC News, he revealed he was eating food “alcoholically,” eventually leading him to start exercising. One of the key changes in his journey was a change in diet, revealed by his trainer to Men’s Health in 2023.
Goodman most recently earned acclaim for his portrayal of President Compson in Digger. He is next set to appear in The Last of Us Season 3 and the upcoming horror film Skeletons. He will also return for the second season of The Beast in Me.
