Nicolas Cage is currently away from his Malibu home due to significant damage caused by a massive sinkhole. The Arcadian actor recently shared how the situation changed his living arrangements and Halloween plans.
Speaking at Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31, Cage provided an update on his current situation. As quoted by Page Six, he said, “I’m currently a little bit homeless. Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.”
The actor also explained how the move affected his Halloween plans with his four-year-old daughter, August. Cage shared his plans for the evening, saying, “I’ll take my daughter out trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica, but I am going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for Worst Director at the Razzies, called The Shining.” He added, “After I put my daughter to bed, I’m going to put on The Shining.”
Cage shares August with his wife, Riko Shibata, and has two sons from previous relationships: Weston and Kal-El.
How the Malibu sinkhole upended Nicolas Cage’s home life
The sinkhole opened near Cage’s beachfront property in September. It measured roughly 60 feet wide and 25 feet deep, prompting Malibu officials to declare a local emergency. The collapse destroyed his home’s driveway and damaged its deck, while a gas leak also affected the neighborhood.
The danger extended beyond Cage’s home. More than 30 nearby properties faced evacuation orders as officials warned residents about unsafe conditions. Seven homes were marked unsafe, while 24 others faced restrictions because emergency vehicles could not reach them safely. Gas service was shut off during the emergency.
Cage bought the 4,000-square-foot Malibu property for $10.5 million in 2024. He said the damage had forced him to stay in hotels. Cage discussed how the incident has altered his family’s routine, specifically mentioning changes to their Halloween plans.
On the professional front, HBO has confirmed that Nicholas Cage will lead True Detective Season 5 alongside Antonio Banderas. He will play detective Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai García. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with Issa López returning as the showrunner.
