Michael Dougherty is bringing Sam, the beloved Halloween icon, back to the screen. The filmmaker has unveiled a new cryptic trailer for a horror movie featuring the character.
Sam: the Soul of Halloween, Dougherty’s latest multimedia project, has released a trailer for Season’s Greetings 2: Mischief Night, with a caption that has left fans confused about whether the trailer teases a real film or a faux preview as a Halloween celebration.
The unexpected trailer comes amid the ongoing celebration of the 30th anniversary of the filmmaker’s 1996 short film Season’s Greetings. The movie marked the debut of Sam and inspired his acclaimed comedy horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat.
Sam is now going viral once again with new content on a dedicated website and social media platforms. The character will supposedly appear in Season’s Greetings 2: Mischief Night.

What happens in the Sam: The Soul of Halloween trailer?
Sam: the Soul of Halloween’s new trailer for a Season’s Greetings sequel features a Grindhouse-esque aesthetic. It begins with a chilling shot of a spooky town at night featuring eerie houses decorated with Jack-o’-lanterns.
The preview then shows someone posting missing posters of a young boy across the town. Sam finally makes his entrance, as the title card “Season’s Greetings 2: Mischief Night” appears on screen.
The trailer showcases several unsettling shots of Sam in several random macabre settings. Additionally, the voiceover monologue describes the movie as “Shocking! Sick! Banned in two counties!”
“Trick ’r Treat obviously became a huge part of Sam’s story, and I remain incredibly proud of that film,” Dougherty said in a recent statement. “But Trick ‘r Treat wasn’t the first chapter in Sam’s story, and it won’t be the last. It really started with this weird little hand-drawn animated short I made as a film student. And for the 30th anniversary, it felt like the perfect time to go back to those roots — handmade, independent and artist-driven — and see where Sam might wander next,” he added.
Some fans believe the trailer is simply a brilliant piece from Sam’s ongoing promotional marketing campaign. Others hope that a Season’s Greetings sequel is on the way.
