Beyoncé’s Mother Reveals the Costly Choice Behind the Pop Icon’s Latest Career Move

Beyond her music career, Beyoncé has taken a hands-on approach to building her beauty brand, Cécred. The pop icon chose to keep control over how its products are developed. Her mother, Tina Knowles, has now explained why the singer decided to fund the venture herself rather than accept outside investment.

In an interview with Fortune for its “Fortune Daily” series, Tina, who is also vice chairwoman of Cécred, revealed that potential investors disagreed with the company’s spending priorities, per People. The haircare brand launched in 2024 and has focused heavily on research and product testing.

“We talked to investors in the early stages,” Tina said. “When it got down to looking at our budgets, the largest part of our budget goes into research and development and testing. The investors just didn’t like that.”

According to Tina, investors wanted the company to spend more on marketing and less on product development. Beyoncé ultimately chose to finance the business herself rather than compromise on that approach.

Tina recalled warning her daughter that the decision could become expensive. However, Beyoncé was determined to retain control over the products and the money invested in their development.

Why Beyoncé wants Cécred to win over customers beyond her fame

Beyoncé wants Cécred to succeed because of the quality of its products, not simply because of her celebrity status.

In a recent interview with i-D magazine, she explained that her goal was to build a business focused on addressing real haircare needs and appealing to customers regardless of their views on her music.

“I had a vision to build something that solved real problems and performed so incredibly that the people who can’t stand my music still use Cécred,” she said. “Because it works.”

The singer also described herself as the brand’s founder, visionary and sole investor, rather than its public face. Tina confirmed that Beyoncé remains closely involved in decisions about the products, even though she rarely appears in the company’s advertisements.

Cécred launched in 2024 with eight products designed to cleanse, condition and strengthen hair. The company has since continued developing its range, drawing on Beyoncé’s experiences with haircare and Tina’s experience in the hair industry.
