Josh Hutcherson is celebrating a major reunion with his former Hunger Games co-stars. After Jennifer Lawrence shared an emotional account of her return to the franchise, Hutcherson has also responded to the news.
On Wednesday, October 28, Josh shared a brief message on his Instagram Story following confirmation that he and Lawrence would appear in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. “Well…we’re back!” he wrote.
The announcement confirms the return of two stars from the original films. Hutcherson played Peeta Mellark, while Lawrence featured as Katniss Everdeen. Woody Harrelson, who portrayed their mentor Haymitch Abernathy, is also returning in the upcoming project.
What Jennifer Lawrence said about the Hunger Games return
During an October 28 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence described her return to the franchise as an emotional experience. The actress said that the opportunity to reunite with Hutcherson and Harrelson was particularly significant, as many familiar crew members were also involved in the film’s production. “It was so crazy because it was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD who I’ve worked with a million times too because I love him, and Josh and Woody.”
Lawrence described how close she and Hutcherson remained during filming, despite the years since their last movie together. “Josh and I didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other. It was so beautiful. I’m excited.” She joked that Harrelson climbed through her hotel room window uninvited, saying the reunion wouldn’t feel the same if he used the door and respected boundaries.
The three actors last appeared together in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, released in 2015. Their return in Sunrise on the Reaping connects the new prequel to the original franchise. It follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Set 24 years before the first film, the story features twice as many tributes competing in the deadly event.
