The Uprising Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Andrew Garfield Fans Feeling Uneasy About New War Movie

The Uprising Rotten Tomatoes score is not as strong as Andrew Garfield fans may have hoped. The historical war movie from Paul Greengrass has opened to mixed reviews ahead of its theatrical release. Its early rating also puts it close to one of the director’s lowest-rated films.

At the current 56% score, The Uprising sits only one point above Greengrass’ Jason Bourne. That 2016 film has a 55% Tomatometer score from 327 reviews. The comparison gives The Uprising an early place among Greengrass’ lowest-rated movies on the site.

The early reception contrasts sharply with Greengrass’s most acclaimed work. He previously directed films such as Captain Phillips, The Bourne Ultimatum, and News of the World. These movies currently have Tomatometer scores of 93%, 92%, and 88%, respectively.

What to know about Andrew Garfield’s The Uprising

The Uprising is set against the backdrop of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt in England. Garfield plays Ploughman, a commoner who becomes a leader in the rebellion against King Richard II. Greengrass wrote and directed the film, which also stars Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, and Tom Hollander.

The real uprising helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood. The movie turns those historical events into a fictional story centered on Ploughman and his rebellion. Focus Features describes his struggle as a “fight for justice” against the king’s tyranny.

Besides Garfield, the cast also includes Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterston. The Uprising has an R rating for violence and bloody images. It runs for two hours and eight minutes.

The Uprising was filmed entirely in Bavaria, Germany. Production took place in Nuremberg, the Penzing Studios near Munich, Bad Windsheim, and Lichtenau. The shoot also used more than 5,000 extras, with real medieval locations recreating 14th-century England.

Produced by Blumhouse and Focus Features, The Uprising opens in domestic theaters on September 11, 2026.
