Veteran actor Samuel Monroe Jr., known for his debut role in the 1993 classic Menace II Society, died on August 26, 2026. He was 52 years old.
His mother Joyce Patton shared the tragic news on her Facebook page. “I want to thank all of my facebook family and friends new and old for praying for Samuel Monroe, Jr., my son.” Patton wrote. “But today God called him home. Please honor my final request to pray for the family especially his 3 children.”
Monroe Jr. died around 10:24 p.m. PT on Wednesday at a hospital, Patton told TMZ. The actor faced serious health issues in recent months. He had been hospitalized since April after developing MRSA pneumonia and meningitis. TMZ also mentions he dealt with other medical complications. A hospital rep told the publication that Monroe had been discharged alive on Thursday.
Born on November 28, 1973, in Los Angeles, Monroe made his memorable feature film debut in the 1993 crime drama. Directed by the Hughes brothers, the film remains his most recognizable role. He later appeared in several notable movies, including Tales From the Hood, Set It Off, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, and The Players Club.
Beyond film, the actor also had credits in television. He did guest appearances in TV hits like NYPD Blue, Murder One, Smart Guy, Southland, and The Lion’s Den.
In the days before his death, Monroe Jr. was involved in a legal dispute between his mother and Shawna Stewart, his alleged wife. Patton filed a petition seeking conservatorship over her son, while also questioning whether Stewart was legally married to him.
In response, Stewart disputed the claim, saying she had the power of attorney and managed Monroe’s finances. She also stated that he did not want his mother controlling his finances or decisions about care.
