Aaron Sorkin has finally revealed the reason he waited 16 years to make The Social Reckoning. The Social Network was released back in 2010. Though Sorkin came across numerous requests for a sequel, he did not move forward until 2026.
Sorkin recently told Empire how he was constantly urged to write about Brexit, Cambridge Analytica, and more. But the 65-year-old felt that years of Facebook controversies were not the ideal inspiration for his movie. Sorkin said, “Brexit, Cambridge Analytica — every time a Facebook event would crop up, I’d get phone calls from people saying, ‘You gotta write about this.”
He further added, “I just couldn’t see where the movie was. Before a film can be thought-provoking, relevant or important, it has to work as something that you’ll watch while eating popcorn.” The American screenwriter and playwright also defined his latest project as “another movie about Facebook written by the same guy.”
What is Social Reckoning all about?
Social Reckoning will continue from 2010’s The Social Network, which introduced Mark Zuckerberg’s origin story. The plot of the movie, per Variety, will focus primarily on Jeff Horwitz’s Facebook Files. Back in 2021, the articles published by Horwitz sparked a massive controversy as they exposed how Facebook allegedly kept quiet despite being aware of the societal harms the platform caused.
The summary for The Social Reckoning, per IMDb, reads, “Follows Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer, who enlisted the help of Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to blow the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.”
Jeremy Strong has been cast as Mark Zuckerberg in the movie. The role was played by Jesse Eisenberg in the 2010 movie. Alongside Strong, The Social Reckoning also stars Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Patrick Fischler, Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr, Joey Brooks, Erin Boyes, Tehmina Sunny, and more.
The movie has a scheduled release date of October 9, 2026.
