The Social Reckoning suffered another bruising weekend in theaters, with ticket sales plunging as the film struggled to maintain its opening momentum. Its latest decline outpaced the drop for Tom Cruise’s Digger, giving the two October releases another rough weekend to contend with.
The Social Reckoning’s drop is even bigger than Digger
According to Box Office Mojo’s statistics, Sony Pictures Releasing’s The Social Reckoning earned an estimated $1.55 million domestically from Oct. 16-18, a steep 69.1% slide from the previous weekend. The film now stands at $8.28 million in North American ticket sales and $14.28 million worldwide, including $6 million from international markets.
The film opened Oct. 9 across 2,606 theaters, collecting $5.02 million in its first weekend. Its four-day Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend haul reached roughly $5.58 million, but the latest figures show that early interest has cooled considerably. The movie’s per-theater average also fell to $594 during its third weekend.
Digger, distributed by Warner Bros., also took a hit, but its domestic decline came in at 71.3% over Oct. 16-18. The film brought in $920,000 that weekend, taking its North American total to $17.24 million. With $24.5 million from overseas markets, its worldwide gross has reached approximately $41.74 million.
A steeper box-office slide hasn’t stopped Digger from maintaining a sizeable lead over The Social Reckoning. Even after suffering a major audience drop following its debut, Digger has pulled in almost three times as much money worldwide as the Facebook-centered drama. The Social Reckoning has to cover considerably more ground to make up.
Aaron Sorkin shifts the focus from Facebook’s creation to the people who exposed its inner workings in The Social Reckoning. Mikey Madison portrays whistleblower Frances Haugen, Jeremy Allen White takes on the role of Wall Street Journal journalist Jeff Horwitz, and Jeremy Strong plays Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
The film draws on the reporting that fueled the newspaper’s 2021 Facebook Files investigation, which scrutinized the company’s operations and examined claims of harm.
