George Costanza Themed Bar Opens In Melbourne

A bar inspired by pretty much everyone’s favourite character in the long-running sitcom Seinfeld, George Costanza, has open up shop in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, just in time for us to all order “Art Vandelay” sandwiches on New Year’s Eve.

As Fairfax Media reports, the brand spanking new George’s Bar features autographed Seinfeld photos, and toasted sandwich and cocktail menus referencing jokes from the show — there’s “The Quitter” toastie for example, with pesto, tomato and mozzarella.

Co-owner and operator of George’s Bar, Dave Barrett, says the idea for a Costanza-themed joint came from a love of Seinfeld.

“We came up with the name George’s and worked backwards, concept themeing it. George Costanza suits a bar in a lot of ways. The humour around George works,” says Barrett, who also owns Fitzroy’s Laundry Bar.

“We’ll be continually doing things and layering the theme. When you walk in, the two front doors have two George’s quotes ‘It’s not a lie if you believe it’ and ‘Everyone must like me, I must be liked’.”

Barrett says he’s been in contact with local artists who might be interested in displaying their Costanza-themed work in George’s Bar, but he knows that the Costanza theme is a risk.

“Cheesy bars in Melbourne aren’t really a thing. After 20 years in this business I think I’ve figured that out so we’re making it a solid bar in it’s own right as well,” he says.
