Apple Watch 2 Will Be Released in 2016, According to Report

While Apple adopting an annual release schedule for one of its product lines is hardly a major surprise, some had speculated that a new iteration of the Apple Watch wouldn’t be as highly sought after as the likes of an iPhone, meaning that the company would likely hold back on a 2016 release for the product. However, a new report from China quotes the chairman of the Watch’s manufacturer as saying that an upgraded version of the device will be released in 2016.

The report, made by Chinese site UDN.com (via CNET), quotes Quanta Computer chairman Barry Lam as saying that Apple will release an Apple Watch with “fully upgraded hardware and software” next year. Lam made the comment during an investor’s meeting in France, though did not provide any further details in regards to the upcoming device.

Again, this isn’t exactly groundbreaking news, but if Apple are set to release a successor to their original smartwatch so soon following its launch in April 2015, many could understandably find themselves a little put off by keeping up to date with the product line. With the Watch being considered more of a luxury than a necessity, is there that much of a need for it to share the same kind of launch schedule that is adopted by the iPhone? Considering the high price of the Watch, this could lead many current owners to feel cheated that their wearable will be considered outdated so soon after they purchased it.

In July, trusted Apple rumor site 9to5Mac published reports from sources “familiar with Apple” that an Apple Watch 2 was being penned in for a 2016 launch, and that the device would boast a video camera and greater independence from the iPhone, though it would also feature the same battery life.

Apple has inevitably not confirmed these reports, though if it is to adopt a yearly release plan, we likely won’t find out more about the device until April 2016.
