British Bar in Trouble for Serving Up Liquid Nitrogen

One of the hot new trends in high-end gastronomy is the inclusion of liquid nitrogen as a freezing agent. You might see chefs and bartenders whip out the goggles on your favorite cooking shows and pour a fusillade of steaming fluids into someone’s cocktail. The hipper, more expensive bars around the work may offer cocktails topped with a little liquid nitrogen as a way to make your drink a little more spectacular.

One bar in England, however, took things a little too far, according to CNET. Oscar’s Wine War in Lancaster has been fined the equivalent of $155,000 after serving something called a Nitro-Jägermeister to a young woman in 2012 on her 18th birthday. The young woman, as a result of downing this concoction, froze her stomach, and had to have her it removed entirely after it was perforated. There was also damage done to her esophagus and small intestine. She was hospitalized for three weeks.

Liquid nitrogen is meant to be a freezing agent, not a comestible. One must wait until the liquid evaporates before drinking it. The bartenders were convinced that this was a safe drink. I think we’ve all learned our lesson here: Don’t drink anything that can freeze shape-shifting robots from the future.
