Samsung is Planning a Virtual Reality Headset for Android Games

Samsung is planning its own virtual reality headset to rival the likes of the Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, according to a new report.

Engadget has stated that sources close to Samsung have revealed that the company’s set to enter into the VR world with a headset of its own, specifically designed for its mobile division.

According to the report, Samsung is looking to beat both the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus to the punch, and will announce the headset later this year. The hardware is allegedly already in the hands of developers, who are working on it with current Samsung Galaxy devices, but that when it is receives its public release it will require next-gen Galaxy phones and tablets that have yet to be announced.

The virtual reality headset is said to be designed for use with Android games, and will retail for cheaper than both the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus, but no exact details of its rumored pricing have been given. It will likely require a wired connection to ensure there’s no lag, and will also boast an OLED screen. Other than that, details are light on the ground.

While we can’t picture a virtual reality headset being much use for the current batch of Android games, that’s not to say that there aren’t game in production directly catered towards being played with the headset on.
