Keep Drinking Wine Because It Destroys Bacteria That Causes Gum Disease

When you get home from work today, make sure you have yourself a glass or five of wine because it can go a long way in protecting your teeth.

A new study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, states that drinking wine actually destroys bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. This study suggests that antioxidants in wine actually prevent bacteria that cause cavities, plaque and even periodontal disease. This is important because this bacteria can cause serious bad news like heart disease and cancer if it enters your bloodstream.

And now the researchers behind this study believe that their new findings can lead to “wine-inspired” toothpastes and mouthwashes that contain these antioxidants. I always wanted to get drunk off toothpaste. Dreams coming true, folks.

Dr Moreno-Arribas, one of the researchers, had this to say:

“We tested concentrations in the range normally found in wine – 50 and 10 µg/ml. Working with cells that model gum tissue we found the two wine polyphenols – caffeic and p-coumaric acids – were generally better than the total wine extracts at cutting back on the bacteria’s ability to stick to the cells.

Delivery methods for these compounds to treat oral disorders should be optimized. Mouthwashes and chewing gums have been proposed as interesting matrices for the application of dietary polyphenols in the management of oral health.”

So there you have it, kids. Wine is obviously good for you and can even save your teeth. So don’t feel too bad when you down an entire bottle in one sitting. Your teeth will thank you.
