Aussie Burger Joint Offers Free Burgers If You Change Your Surname To “Burger”

UPDATE 01/07/16: The Victorian government has instructed Mr Burger to cease running their Australia’s Next Mr Burger competition, as it constitutes improper use under the Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996.

Original Story: In a weirdly wonderful move of burger marketing, Melbourne’s Mr Burger says it’s legitimately offering customers a free, lifetime supply of burgers if they officially change their last name to “Burger”.

It was only two months ago that Mr Burger’s marketing wizards used April Fool’s Day to fool Melbourne into believing it was getting a “burger tram”, but their latest promotion actually seems real.

As Broadsheet reports, Mr Burger Marketing Manager Maleik Edwards says the company’s announcement is 100 percent legit.

“Last week was a pretty heavy week in news, between Brexit, the election, and the crazy weather. We thought this was a great way of brightening people’s day,” Edwards says. “It’s a bit interesting and fun, and it’s about celebrating the ridiculous things in life.”

So, if you’re over 18 and free burgers for life is something you’re interested in, here’s what you need to do:

  • Officially change your surname to “Burger” via Births, Deaths & Marriages Victoria using this form – and don’t worry, Mr Burger will cover the $101.40 name-change fee
  • Send the Mr Burger team an email with a copy of your name-change confirmation from the Australian Government before 31st July
  • Once approved, enjoy your endless supply of burger goodness

Anyone who actually changes their last name to “Burger” will be entitled to a burger a day for the rest their life, or for as long as they keep their juicy new last name. There’s also no cap on the number of winners, because, well, only a few true heroes will love burgers enough to change their surname.

Oh and if your surname is already Burger (or maybe Bürger – is that German?), you won’t be able to enter but Mr Burger might throw some vouchers your way to ease your unfortunate situation.

For more information on the competition, or to enter, head to the Mr Burger website.
