Surreal.tv Develops The Last Starfighter For TV

“Greetings, Starfighter! You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Kodan armada.”

The Star League must be having a hard time recruiting Starfighters since most of the arcades went under two decades ago. But there may yet be life in The Last Starfighter franchise!

Variety is reporting that original Last Starfighter screenwriter Jonathan Betuel is teaming up with Surreal.tv to develop The Starfighter Chronicles as a TV series, based on the world that Betuel created in the 1984 cult sci-fi film.

While The Last Starfighter followed a human teenager who was thrust into an intergalactic war, The Starfighter Chronicles will focus on the Star League itself as it brings law & order to the space ways. It’s unclear if The Starfighter Chronicles will maintain continuity with the movie or serve as a complete reboot for the franchise.

While Betuel writes the script for The Starfighter Chronicles, Surreal.tv will be adding VR integration to the potential series. As envisioned by the series’ creative team, The Starfighter Chronicles will include scenes in VR that allow users of virtual reality headsets to look around inside the Gunstar space ships and experience space battles from all angles.

It’s a very ambitious undertaking that hasn’t really been tried before. But there is a precedent for the franchise to serve as a trailblazer. The Last Starfighter was one of the first movies to extensively use CGI. Perhaps The Starfighter Chronicles can do the same for VR.

There isn’t currently a network attached to The Starfighter Chronicles, and the series is still early in its development cycle.
