Tracy McGrady Throws First Strikeout, Promptly Retires

Whether you’re Michael Jordan sinking a buzzer-beater against the Jazz or you’re at the batting cages and simply want to get that one last line drive, many feel it’s important to go out on top. Tracy McGrady would have to agree.

The retired NBA star took up baseball this year and signed a contract with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic league. In his short two month tenure, McGrady threw a 6.75 ERA, walking 10 batters through four games and 6.2 innings of play before getting a spot start Wednesday night in the league’s All-Star Game — who cares if it’s a gimmick, right?… In the start he only pitched 1.1 innings but recorded his first every strikeout.

He then retired immediately following the game.

T-Mac told CBS Houston, “It has been a tremendous ride. It is my last game today. I informed the team this would be my last outing and I appreciate them giving me this opportunity to start the game and enjoy this great mid-summers classic.”

McGrady hadn’t played baseball since his senior year of high school — just like myself. Now if only I were a former NBA scoring champion maybe I could get the opportunity to slip my cleats on again.
