Musical Chairs Free Agency: Kevin Love Style

Minnesota Timberwolves v Los Angeles ClippersReports have been swirling for some time now that Kevin Love’s departure from the Timberwolves is pretty much a sure thing, and according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski, it could be happening sooner rather than later via a trade.

The question is, where will Minnesota ship their All Star forward? Much like what happens in musical chairs, Love’s destination is uncertain at this point. With that in mind, let’s play a few rounds.

“California Love” – 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre

“Out on bail fresh outta jail, California dreamin

Soon as I stepped on the scene, I'm hearin hoochies screamin”

Were Love to wind up in Los Angeles, the Lakers would be able to pair him up with Kobe Bryant and not much else. The Lakers were basically a D-League team last year and they have multiple first round draft picks being sent out in future years (2015 and 2017) with none coming in. Were Love to come to LA, it might feel like a jail break for a little while, but the Lakers don’t have much to offer to set him up with a winning team.

“I Will Always Love You” – Dolly Parton via Whitney Houston

“Please don't cry:

We both know I'm not what you, you need”

file_199502_0_james_harden-rocketsThe idea of pairing Love up with Dwight Howard, James Harden, Jeremy Lin and the rest of the players that the Houston Rockets have accumulated sounds nice, but it doesn’t really make sense. They already have a big guy who can rebound and shoot from the outside in Chandler Parsons and he’s younger and cheaper. Love is also a sub-par defensive player for his size, another thing that Houston doesn’t need at this point.

"25 Or 6 To 4" – Chicago

Flashing lights against the sky

Giving up I close my eyes”

file_181283_0_CHIBULLSHEADERThe Bulls have done a good job of walking the line between being a competitive team and accumulating future assets, so they could definitely be viewed as a dark bovine candidate to acquire the 25-year-old. The problem is, Derrick Rose has played just 49 games in the three seasons since he was a league MVP and the team will never get over the hump unless he’s healthy. If Love goes there and Rose goes down, he’ll regret it.

“San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)” – Scott McKenzie

If you're going to San Francisco

You're gonna meet some gentle people there”

Los Angeles Clippers v Golden State Warriors - Game SixOutside of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, there probably isn’t a single player on the Warriors roster that the organization would be unwilling to part with. Golden State has shown a willingness to take chances in the past (trading Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut for example) and chips like Harrison Barnes and David Lee would certainly be a nice haul for Minnesota if they are going to lose Love anyway. As an added bonus, Love’s aversion to defense would fit in nicely on the Bay Area basketball team.

“More Than A Feeling” – Boston

“I lost myself in a familiar song

I closed my eyes and I slipped away”

Toronto Raptors v Boston Celtics

With 17 NBA Championships, one more than the rival Lakers, the Celtics have a winning tradition that Love would likely find attractive and fit right into. They also have a plethora of first-round picks through 2018, including their own, that they might be able to package with a young player with upside like Jared Sullinger to entice the Wolves to deal Love. It would take some doing, but starting a new “Big Three” with Rajon Rondo and Love could work. Rondo’s down…
