Eagles Lineman Shows Off His Signing Bonus Check — For $0

If you’re an NFL player, signing bonus money is music to your ears. It isn’t tied to on-field performance and it can’t be taken away.  It’s, in essence, free money.

Guys like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are seeing annual signing bonus checks north of $7 million.  But not everybody in the NFL is on the signing bonus gravy train…and the Philadelphia Eagles have apparently taken the unusual step of reminding the have-nots of exactly how much they don’t have.

Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis is in the third year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal…which ain’t bad.  But that dollar figure doesn’t include any signing bonus money, so when Mathis got a signing bonus check — for $0 — he had to share his amusement with his fans and friends on Instagram.

Signing bonuses are important to NFL players because contracts in professional football aren’t fully guaranteed. Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Evan Mathis, who will enter the third year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal next season, posted a picture of a signing bonus check he received from the team to his Instagram on Friday. He also included a caption that read “Hell yeah, just got my signing bonus.” Normally this wouldn’t be funny, but the check was for $0. That doesn’t seem like a fair signing bonus for one of the better offensive guards in the league. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported in March that the Eagles made Mathis available for trade. Check out Mathis’ hilarious signing bonus below.

Mathis took the odd check with good humor, posting “Hell yeah, just got my signing bonus.”

But a word of advice to the Eagles: maybe rather than cutting those worthless checks and stuffing it in your lesser player’s faces, only send checks to players for actual American dollars.

Just a thought…
