Aussies Build On Another Slow Ashes Start

Australia overcame another shaky beginning to an Ashes Test on home soil, bouncing back from a rough start to finish 6-236 at stumps on day one.

Steve Smith registered his second Test century, and his first in Australia, in a 124-run partnership with Brad Haddin to help home side build on a score that was at one point just 5-143.

Smith finished with 103 runs, not out, from 173 deliveries, reaching the ton with boundary No.15. Haddin produced 55 and Warner 60 in 38-degree heat.

“I felt pretty good today. The boys said this is one of the best wickets to bat on once you get in. To be able to get in and cash in, it was pretty important so I’m pretty happy,” Smith told ABC’s Grandstand.

“I think for me today, I left the ones that were a bit high and the ones that were a bit lower I got a hold of. I’m pretty happy with my patience and the way I took on the balls when they came.

“It was nice out there, it was pretty warm, but the boys were doing a good job running out the drinks. We’re in a good position.

Opener Chris Rodgers fell early and cheaply (11 runs) when he attempted a suicide single and was run out clean by James Anderson at short mid-wicket.

No.3 Shane Watson followed shortly after for just 18, carelessly edging a Stuart Broad single to Graeme Swan in the slips.

Captain Michael Clarke wasn’t able to live up to the attention he received leading up to his 100th Test milestone, forcing Alastair Cook to dive low for the catch after producing a disappointing score of 24.

Warner provided some resistance and looked to on his way to a big total, but fell to a lazy cut sent to backward point.

Smith resumes at the crease tomorrow with partner Mitchell Johnson also on 39. The duo have combined for 59 runs heading into day two.
