Tech Squibs: NudeAudio Strips Down Portable Speaker Design

This Tech Squib could’ve been all pink and fleshy. But it’s not.

There are scores of portable speakers these days. Whether wired, wireless or Bluetooth – or some combination — they all tend to do pretty much the same thing in pretty much the same. If a company is in that speaker business, the trick is to distinguish your speakers from the crowd in some way. Since the speakers’ similar sizes make acoustic quality fairly similar, most manufacturers are turning to aesthetic design to attract buyers.

NudeAudio opted to design four speakers (S Wired, S, M and L) — each a little larger, louder and more expensive than the previous. Each speaker comes in a simple, padded mesh and plastic casing with a rope for easy carry. The S versions look like little Soap on a Ropes, while the L (above) could be a woman’s clutch purse.

The overall design is neat and elegant, with a soft color scheme to round out its modern motif. All but the S Wired is Bluetooth capable, and the sound quality grows with each step up the ladder.

The units start around $30 and head north of $100 with the L unit. They’re easy to transport and provide competitive audio quality.

In the end, as with so many of these speakers, the decision to buy rests in your own aesthetic.
