Last month, word broke that Syfy is developing “12 Monkeys” as a potential TV series. Now the project has taken a major step forward.
Syfy has announced that the “12 Monkeys” TV project has been given a cast contingent pilot order. This means that “!2 Monkeys” will only begin filming if the main cast members get Syfy’s approval.
Based upon Chris Marker’s short film, La Jetee, 12 Monkeys was released in 1995 as director Terry Gilliam cast Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner from a devastated future who was sent back in time to figure out what caused the apocalypse and what role that Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt) and the mysterious group known as The Army of The 12 Monkeys played in humanity’s destruction. Madeleine Stowe co-starred as Dr. Kathryn Railly, a psychiatrist who realizes that Cole’s time travel tales are more than a delusion.
The potential “12 Monkeys” TV series will retain the same premise with an all new cast. The pilot script was written by “Terra Nova” veterans Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, both of whom will also executive produce the project. Jon Cassar (“24”) will direct the pilot episode.
“12 Monkeys” is expected to begin production in November. If it is ordered to series, a late 2014 debut seems likely.
