Tech Squibs: Amp Giant Marshall Tunes into Headphones

SQUIB: a : a short humorous or satiric writing or speech; b : a short news item. (Merriam-Webster)

This Tech Squib would you like to keep it down, for heaven’s sake — except between your own ears.

Marshall has been making top of the line amps for electric guitars and other instruments for a long time. The name has been a sign of quality for amateur and professional musicians alike.  In recent years, they’ve added professional quality headphones to their line.

We had a chance to try out a pair — the 04090800 Monitor Over-Ear Headphones. Retailing for about $200, the Monitor unit completely covers your ears, sealing out outside sound with comfortable leather finish cups. The unit does get a little hot over those ears, but all similar units do the same. One of these days, some headphones maker will find a way to expel that over-ear heat.

A double-ended coil cord with microphone and separate remote (included) is detachable and can plugged in either side of the unit.

The microphone and remote lets the wearer answer calls while listening to music. The set also includes a carrying case.

The sound quality on these Marshalls was outstanding — rich, accurate and even overpowering if we fed the music too loud. Their price is competitive with most other mid-range consumer units, making these headphones as reliable as the amps that built Marshall’s name.
