First Look: The New Villain of ‘Sherlock’ Season 3

After the events of “Sherlock” Season 2, Moriarty (Andrew Scott) may be dead, but Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) will have a new adversary to face in the upcoming third season.

“Sherlock” producer Sue Vertue has tweeted a picture of Lars Mikkelsen as Charles Augustus Magnussen, whom she describes as “Sherlock’s new nemesis.”

The early theory is that Magnussen is actually a modernized version of Charles Augustus Milverton, the so-called “king of the blackmailers” who appeared in the Arthur Conan Doyle short story, “The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton.” That story took place after Sherlock Holmes’ return from Reichenbach Falls, which would be appropriate since the third season will also take place after Sherlock faked his death.

Mikkelsen may best be known in America for appearing in the original Danish version of “The Killing” and “Those Who Kill,’ in addition to numerous other stints for international television series and films. Mikkelsen is also the brother of “Hannibal” star, Mads Mikkelsen.

“Sherlock” Season 3 is expected to debut later this year on BBC One, with a North American premiere on PBS some time in 2014.
