Has Karl Urban Spoiled the Star Trek 2 Villain?

Seriously, SPOILERS ahead. You have been warned.

After months of hemming and hawing about who Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, the beans might just have been spilled by cast member Karl Urban, who plays the Enterprise’s physician Bones. In an interview with SFX, Urban was asked about working with Cumberbatch, to which he said the following:

“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

Gary Mitchell, you say? Hmm… Does that ring any bells to all you Star Trek fans out there?

Assuming this isn’t a clever bit of misdirection on Karl Urban’s part (which would be an odd choice, since all audience interest has previously been focused on Khan), Cumberbatch would be playing the antagonist from the original series episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” in which Gary Mitchell (originally played by Gary Lockwood), an old friend of Captain Kirk’s, develops godlike powers and attacks the crew of the Enterprise.

There are infinitely worse episodes that Abrams could have mined for his Star Trek sequel, that’s for sure. Although building an entire blockbuster around Tribbles would be a lot of fun, if you ask us. [Editor’s Note: This is why nobody asks us.]

Well, you stuck it through to the end and saw the potential spoiler. What do you think? Are you satisfied, disappointed, ambivalent? Obviously you care, so let us know what you think about this direction for the Star Trek movies.

CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 news before the dilithium crystals melt.
