Jonathan Nolan Defends Tom Hardy’s Bane Voice

At a recent party for the Television Critics Association hosted by CBS, Jonathan Nolan was on hand to answer questions about his television series Person of Interest. We’ll have more coverage of his responses in our TV Channel pretty soon, but in the meantime we have some reactions from the co-writer of The Dark Knight Rises about the upcoming film, which you may have heard about.

When asked about the minor controversy over Tom Hardy’s arguably indistinct vocal work for the film’s main villain, Bane, and the impact it might have had on the dialogue he wrote for the character, Nolan had this to say: “I gotta tell you, I think what Tom Hardy’s doing with the role is spectacular. I have the benefit of seeing a little bit more than the audience has seen at this point. It’s pretty spectacular.”

Naturally he defends his own film, but also naturally, yes, he’s seen more of The Dark Knight Rises than you have, even if you did catch the IMAX preview in front of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Frankly, we can understand Tom Hardy just fine, so we suspect that without a cheering throng to distract you, at least, this might all turn out okay. It’s Christopher Nolan for crying out loud. Hasn’t he earned a little benefit of the doubt by now?

About that IMAX footage, Nolan also had this to say about the genesis of that mid-air action sequence: “It’s an amazing team with my brother, David Goyer and myself. Those are two great guys to work with and brainstorm with. I think Chris had long wanted to do sort of the aerial spectacular. It’s such a good fit for the Imax cameras that he likes to shoot with and so that was a long time in the making.”
