Sony Thinks You Want a Venom Movie Without Spider-Man

Spider-Man has more nemeses than most other superheroes combined, but one of his most enduring and popular villains is Venom. The creature is an alien symbiote who once bonded with Spider-Man, but was eventually rejected and found its way onto other human hosts, including the psychological disturbed Eddie Brock and, more recently, Peter Parker’s childhood bully Flash Thompson. It gave those hosts Spider-Man-like powers, and a mouth full of jagged teeth and a Gene Simmons tongue that looks great on paper but makes absolutely no sense.

Indeed, Venom is such a popular creation that Sony Pictures has long been developing a feature film starring the character. But when Sony decided to abandon their Spiderverse plans after the box office disappointment of Amazing Spider-Man 2, and instead agreed to share the character with Marvel Studios, plans for a Venom movie appeared to have been scuttled right along with the plans for a Sinister Six feature film.

Today, we learned from Hollywood Reporter that Sony is back at it again. The Venom movie is once again being developed. Dante Harper has been tapped to write the screenplay, which the publication notes will be “unrelated” to the upcoming Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland.

Whether or not audiences will actually want to see that version of Venom on-screen remains to be seen. The character is literally defined by his relationship with Spider-Man, and had no identity whatsoever until its connection to the wall-crawler. There’s no reason to even call the creature “Venom” except as a play on its connection to Spider-Man.

What’s more, Venom’s connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is interesting and well worth exploring, since the symbiote has been a part of super teams like The Thunderbolts and The Guardians of the Galaxy.

Is a solo Venom movie really worth exploring? We may find out when the film comes out, but then again that might never happen. Venom has been in the works for many years and never come to fruition, except for the last third of Spider-Man 3, and of course all of the fans LOVED that.
