Lois Lane Is Superwoman In DC Comics’ New Ongoing Series

For almost eight decades, Lois Lane has been known as “Superman’s girlfriend,” even when she was actually his wife. Now, Lois Lane is getting her own comic book series again as the all-new Superwoman.

This Superwoman comic will be released in August, and it is a part of DC Comics’ upcoming DC Rebirth line-wide relaunch, and it will be Lois Lane’s first solo ongoing series in decades. Phil Jimenez will write and draw Superwoman, which finds Lois “imbued with the powers of Superman.” It’s been rumored that the New 52 Superman could be killed off or depowered before the DC Rebirth event, which may account for how Lois gets her powers in this series.

DC’s description for the Superwoman series adds that “Lois Lane pledges to use her powers to protect Metropolis as the new Superwoman. The only problem is, Lois’ new powers are killing her, and neither she nor her friend and confidant Lana Lang know what to do about it. Will Lois even survive long enough to find out the deadly secret of Ultra-Woman?”

It’s hard not to think of Marvel’s recent Thor relaunch, which also placed the hero’s former love interest into the lead role with powers that are killing her. But before anyone freaks out over Lois Lane’s new career as a superheroine, keep in mind that this status quo probably won’t last forever. There’s also two Lois Lanes running around in the DC Universe: the New 52 Lois who never had a romance with Superman, and pre-Flashpoint Lois Lane who is still happily married to the Clark Kent from her world. That version of Lois also has  a superpowered son, Jonathan Kent, who will be headlining the Super Sons comic alongside Damien Wayne, Batman’s son.
