Steven Moffat Lays Out His Conditions For a Doctor Who & Star Trek Crossover

In the realm of TV science fiction, the two longest running franchises are Doctor Who and Star Trek. Next year, Star Trek will celebrate its 50th anniversary, while the Doctor Who franchise is currently 52 years old. With the upcoming new Star Trek series coming to CBS All Access in 2017, TV shows of both Star Trek and Doctor Who will be produced simultaneously since 1989. Could two of sci-fi’s biggest hits eventually stage a crossover?

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat was recently asked by Digital Spy whether he would be up for a crossover with Star Trek. Moffat’s reply was unambiguously in the affirmative, but he does have a pretty big conditional attached to his approval.

“If [Doctor Who] crossed over with Star Trek, it would have to be real Star Trek,” said Moffat. “It would have to be Captain Kirk and Mr Spock. It has to be the Doctor meets Mr Spock – that’s the one you want…I mean, would I do it? Yes, in a heartbeat. I think you might find the Americans a little bit trickier to deal with!”

That’s not entirely out of the question, considering that the rebooted Star Trek films have recast the original characters with younger actors, including Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. But getting a crossover together would require a willingness on Paramount’s part to make it so, and it would also depend upon the availability of Pine, Quinto, and the rest of the new Star Trek cast. Potentially, it could happen…it’s just not very likely.

But if you’re a comic book reader, then you’re in luck. In 2012, IDW published Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2, an eight-issue storyline that brought Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor into the Enterprise D alongside Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard and the rest of the Next Gen crew. There was even a flashback sequence that featured Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor meeting the crew of the original Enterprise, as seen below in the cover by J.K. Woodward.

Until a live-action Star Trek and Doctor Who crossover materializes, that’s the closest thing to an official crossover that fans are going to get.
