First Look | Marvel’s Jessica Jones Series on Netflix

Unlike Daredevil, Marvel’s Jessica Jones has never been adapted to live-action before the upcoming original series on Netflix. And it’s time to change that!

As created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos in the mature readers comic book, Alias, Jessica Jones was a former superheroine whose short-lived career left her traumatized and withdrawn. In the present day, Jessica attempted to reinvent herself as a private detective while struggling with alcoholism. But no matter how hard she tried, Jessica kept getting pulled back into the world of superheroes.

The live-action Jessica Jones series will share most of her comic book counterpart’s history while sharing a corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Today, Marvel and Netflix finally released a series of official photos from Jessica Jones which offers the first real glimpse of some of the main characters.

Jessica Jones

Former Breaking Bad and Don’t Trust the B—- In Apt. # 23 star Krysten Ritter is playing Jessica Jones…and she is just as messed up as her comic book counterpart. Ultimately, Jessica wants to be good, but she has a number of vices and alcohol is only one of them.

Luke Cage

Mike Colter is making his MCU debut as Luke Cage before starring in his own Netflix original series. Cage has super-strength and indestructible skin thanks to a botched prison experiment. In Marvel’s comic book universe, Cage and Jessica had a friendship that became a romance. It’s not clear if that will be the case in the Jessica Jones series, but Cage is one of her closest allies on the show.

Trish Walker

The woman to Jessica’s right is Patricia “Trish” Walker, as played by Rachael Taylor. Comic book fans may recognize her as the MCU’s version of Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat. But this version of the character isn’t a superheroine. She’s a former model and child actress turned radio host who happens to be one of Jessica’s closest friends. In the comics, that role was filled by Carol Danvers (who is better known now as Captain Marvel), but that role is being saved for the eventual Captain Marvel movie.

Harper

To the left of Jessica is Carrie Anne Moss’ Harper, a new character who was created for the Jessica Jones series. Very little is known about Harper except that she may be a powerful ally for Jessica to have in her corner.

Kilgrave

Doctor Who fans should instantly recognize David Tennant as Kilgrave, Jessica Jones’ ultimate nemesis. In the comic book universe, Kilgrave is better known as The Purple Man and he has mind control powers which he used to bend Jessica to his will. It’s unclear if the MCU version of Kilgrave will have the same history with Jessica, but he does represent a bit of unfinished business from her past.

All 13 episodes of Jessica Jones will debut on Netflix on Friday, November 20.
