This comes after a Democratic congresswoman sarcastically proposed renaming Lake Ontario in Harp’s honor. The suggestion came as Trump threatened to rename the Great Lake “Lake America,” adding to tensions with Canada and interloping on Harp’s unusual role in the president’s orbit.

Donald Trump escalated the feud on Tuesday with a Truth Social post claiming the U.S. was “giving serious consideration” to changing Lake Ontario’s name. The lake straddles the border between Ontario and New York, which is a symbolic flashpoint in the trade war between the two nations.
Michigan Representative Debbie Dingle fired back with a pointed jab. “Let’s just call it Lake Natalie so we know you’ll start protecting our Great Lakes,” Dingle wrote on X. The comment referenced Natalie Harp and triggered immediate reactions from Trump loyalists, some of whom attacked the congresswoman whose state borders four of the five Great Lakes.
The response mirrored the fallout from Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff’s remarks more than a week earlier. At a rally, Ossoff mocked Trump’s travel habits and referenced Harp by name. The White House responded with unusual force, and insiders later admitted the aggressive pushback likely amplified what might have stayed a minor story.
Trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada collapsed late last Friday after American negotiators introduced last-minute demands. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the conditions as unfair and uneconomic. Trump then imposed 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. Carney announced retaliatory tariffs in response. The dispute now threatens Republican midterm prospects, particularly in border states.
Moreover, hours after Ontario’s outspoken leader Doug Ford’s comments, calling the US president a “loser”, Trump posted a map showing Lake Ontario relabeled as “Lake America.” The move echoed his earlier decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico. However, the Great Lakes proposal lacks any formal mechanism for unilateral American action given the shared border and international agreements governing the waterways.
